This mixed media painting was built up using many layers of plaster, collage, and acrylic paint + glazes. The collage layers are comprised from pages of old books, papers and stamps I inherited from a dear friend who passed away unexpectedly in 2021, as well as maps of places she lived and visited frequently, and hand-painted papers. In the final layers, I used scans of old letters and documents of hers too valuable to destroy - these were transferred using acrylic medium. All ephemera has been transformed and distressed by bold marks cut into thick clear mediums and filled with pearlescent plaster. The final layer of brushed deep magenta-to-aubergine plaster represents the circuitous paths our lives can take with moments of calm and beauty, alongside chaos and confusion.
