This mixed media painting was inspired by the bountiful, tumbling bougainvillea that we encountered while exploring the narrow streets of the Greek Cyclades Islands during our 2017 visit. The collage layers incorporate photos taken during our trip alongside bits of 1959/60 Greek scientific journals. The handwoven overlay of natural linen, cotton and silk recalls Greece’s rich textile traditions and uses pulled-thread embroidery to emphasize the collage composition below. Bougainvillea represents abundance, prosperity and passion in Greek culture, and although not native to Greece, thrives there in bursts of color draped over ancient, textured white walls, framing sun-drenched courtyards.
